Patio Cover
About Patio Covers
When you think patio cover, you likely think of those canvas or nylon covers that extend from the house and look like something that is just as likely to be found on the side of an RV. That is not all that these covers are, though. They can be decorative and functional with a little work and a little creativity. Take, for example, the lattice patio cover that is becoming more and more popular in homes across the United States.
A lattice patio cover is generally made of wood, by may also be made of various metals. It is a woven-looking or criss-crossed series of wood or metal strips. The metal is often grained to look like wood, but to have a longer outdoor life than the wood. Because of the nature of lattice, they only block about half of the sun and a similar amount of rain. However, with a little creativity you can increase that coverage.
One of the most common additions to a lattice patio cover is vegetation. There are a couple of ways to do it. One way is to grow ivy or other vines up and over your patio cover. This creates shade that is not unlike what you would find under a nice tree.
Another option that achieves similar results are hanging baskets. There are hanging plant baskets available and you can plant whatever you want in them. You still create shade, but are not limited to vines and ivies. Whichever you choose is up to you, but remember that if you choose to hang baskets you may have to water if there is not enough rain in your area since those plants will likely not be as hearty as ivy.
Lattice patio covers are a great way to add style to your home while creating cover for your outdoor entertaining area. By adding plants in some form, you can create shade that rivals that of a big tree. All it takes for you is a little know-how, a little creativity, and little action.
